artefact of colonialism (2023)
38cm X 38, antique linen and silk and cotton embroidery thread (timber frame)
This artwork replicates a colonial land grant map of Dharawal Lands in Western Sydney. (Original map sourced from NSW Law Registry Services) It centres on the land grant of Charles Throsby, a man who was also a rare advocate for indigenous people.
The quote “The barbarity practiced by our own countrymen” is from Throsby’s 1816 Glenfield Farm Letter decrying atrocities committed by colonists against the local indigenous people.
The original hand written letter (traced for the embroidery) is sourced with thanks, from the Mitchell Library of NSW collection.
