architectural works

ostia (2013)

Timber, steel
210 x 120 cm
Picture

The dimensions of the archway were copied from an existing doorway in Ostia, Rome, although originally it was structurally supported by walls either side. The work was created after volunteering on an archeological dig at Portus, south of Rome. It was an exploration of the repetitive use of architectural elements which connect contemporary times with antiquity.

boisbuchet (2014)

Plaster paris, steel
280 x 120 cm

This work was made in response to Domaine Boisbuchet, Poitiers, France. The dimensions of the entrance door of the chateau were replicated in an archway of plaster of paris brick. The bricks were handmade in timber molds, with impressions taken of the surfaces of the building and woods around the estate. This arch was constructed as part of a workshop at Domaine Boisbuchet.

ramparts (2016)

Mixed hardwood, black canvas, magnifying glass
185 x 643 x 74 cm

Ramparts is a timber replica of a stretch of existing 19th century rampart, originally built to protect a North African coastal town from pirates and enemy navies. Each of the tall units that make up the ramparts, serve not only as a physical structure but also as a camera obscura, as used in the Renaissance. It is possible to enter these structures and see an image of landscape, or a companion outside. The image will be crisp but upside down. The work is an exploration on our battle, actual and psychological, to understand the other, be they lover, friend or refugee seeking to join our society.
