Cotton handkerchiefs
Average 30 x 30 cm
Printed on personal family handkerchiefs, these images of early European depictions of Australian flora and fauna, symbolise the first contact between colonial explorers and the local indigenous people. (The original images were sourced from research at the Australian Museum Library and are reproduced with their permission.) The choice of handkerchiefs, decorated with stain-like images of the early representations or ‘first contact’ impressions with the Sydney Harbour area, suggest a complex and ambivalent relationship with our origins as a nation.
