diary sampler (2022)
By reimagining an 1800s embroidery sampler, this artwork bears witness to daily life at the historic house Meroogal, on the state’s south coast and, at the same time, reflects on the machinations of colonialism. Specifically, the sampler represents a day in the life of Totti Thorburn, a long time resident of the house; objects depicted are drawn from her diaries. These are overlaid on the last land grants map (1850), recording the division of lands of the original Dhurga and Dharawal speaking peoples. The animals that are considered important to, or totems of, these original custodians are also depicted in a circle form around the home.
