colonial sampler series (2022/23)
This is a series of artworks mimicks 19 th century embroidery samplers. In the early colonial era, girls were encouraged to stitch samplers to develop their feminine skills. Samplers were often prescriptive; many were documents of women’s lives. These samplers, stitched by an unschooled hand, imagine a young woman of the colonial era with a social conscience, documenting what she sees happening around her.
