Water Room started with an observation that when rain is backlit, it creates a visual ‘wall’; it then evolved into a contemplation of barely-defined place, or implied space. Water Room is essentially a small room of mist, visible because it is lit by a film projection. Installed in a black-walled, darkened space, it is a physically formed by a copper structure hung from the ceiling that produces a rectangular shape of very fine mist. This mist is lit by a loop of Super 8 film footage of time-lapse dawn. (The images projected onto the mist appear abstracted but are partially visible on the walls of the darkened room. They are films of dawn in an olive grove, arguably another implied ‘place’ in the natural world.) When the visitor enters the dark room, this ephemeral structure is barely visible, but as they walk toward the mist, its shape becomes clear. It is an immersive work: it is possible to walk around or even into it and be surrounded by mist. Water Room is designed to intensify peoples’ experience of space and the fragility and potential wonder of making a place for oneself.
