redeeming love (2023)

This series of small collages is an exploration of vulnerable and endangered species in Australia. The choice of background image is made from my personal environment on the coast on traditional Gadigal Lands. This is to make the loss of species more personal to me and hopefully others.

The animals are presented in the context of a landscape, each is identified and specified as vulnerable, at risk or endangered in various states. The depictions of the animals are all taken from Colonial engravings and paintings. Colonialism prompted the decrease and mass extinction of animals in Australia as in other countries around the world. The seeming affection with which many of the animals are drawn belies their fate in response to colonialism: the land clearing, culling, feral animals and other threats that continue to impact on them today. The images bear witness to the imminent dangers and also pay homage and celebrate the animals as individual species still living and fighting for their survival.

The collages are one offs and are printed using photo release on A4 archival water colour paper with collaged images printed on archival photographic paper.
